Key people involved in the North-West Rebellion.

Although many events occured during the North-West Rebellion, also known as the Red River resistance, the main people involved were:

 

Louis Riel - A Canadian polotician, founder of the province Manitoba, and political leader of the Métis people.

 

William McDougall - A Canadian lawyer, politician, and one of the Fathers of Confederation.

 

John A. Macdonald - A Canadian politicion, one of the Fathers of Confederation, and the first Prime Minister Of Canada.

 

Métis People - Are Aboriginal people, their race is a specific mix of Frist Nations and Europeans.

   What was the North           West Rebellion?

The North-West Rebellion was a rebellion that was against the government for the lack of food they were recieving. There was a army made that was led by Louis Reil and planned to attack the government. However, the first move was made by John A. McDonald who planned several attacks at the rebellion forcing Louis Reil to surrender and get hanged.

 

  • The North West Rebellion was a violent five month disagreement against the Canadian government.

  • It was caused by rising fear among the Aboriginal peoples as well as settlers from the west.

  • In 1885, series of battles and outbreaks of violence caused many people to die. This result caused enforcement of Canadian law in the West, and the hanging of rebel leader Louis Riel.
